Diana Ross and Michael

"But I'm crazy about Michael and I love him a lot. He's been my inspiration. He's a very gentle, wonderful human being, one of the special ones in this universe, and I don't even know if he knows how special he is. So whenever I can be around him I like it. (...) His aura is only about love."

EB: Any black ladies in your life?

MJ: Sure, but you wouldn´t take me seriously.

EB: Try me.

MJ: It's Diana Ross. I love her.

EB: Do you mean as a big sister?

MJ: No, that's not what I mean.

EB: You're not saying you'd like to marry Diana Ross, are you?

MJ: Oh, yeah, I'm saying that.

EB: But she's so much older than you. You mean you feel something other than close friendship for her?

MJ: Uh huh. And what does age have to do with it? Look at it this way: how old would you be if you didn't even know how old you are?

Ebony Interview, December, 1982

  1983:

"Of course one of my best friends in the world is Diana Ross. She’s a good friend, a very dear friend. She’s the kind of person I can tell anything to- the most private of secrets! And she tells me her secrets as well. Sometimes I tell her I’m going to marry her. Our relationship goes on forever".
Michael Jackson, 1

Focus Magazine, February 1984
RO/CLASS: How do you feel about the gossip about your sex life?

Jackson: I don’t listen to it. Or read it.

RO/CLASS: Do you think most of the public imagine you’re gay?

Jackson: I think most people are smart enough to know you can’t judge a book by its cover.

RO/CLASS: But why the flamboyant touches like glittery socks or the silver glove?

Jackson: Because I like them.

RO/CLASS: Are you very sheltered from outsiders, as has been claimed?

Jackson: I have to make the most of my time and I do choose the people I’m with.

RO/CLASS: How is your personal life? Is there someone special?

Jackson: It’s wonderful and I am in love…

National Enquirer, April 10, 1984:

"She's really beautiful - everything you could wish for. Diana is real motherly to me". I can confide in her. I love her - perhaps she will marry me one day". ~ Michael Jackson.

"Michael asked if we would like a tour of the house. Bubbles went back in his cage while the rest of us began the tour with the room next to Michael's bedroom -- the Diana Ross shrine. With a convex ceiling and white brick walls, the room looked like a wine cellar. Every square inch was covered with photos of Diana Ross from her earliest years with the Supremes to recent years. On shelves, tables and the floor were hundred of candles that Michael kept burning 24/7 to "honor his friend." We were speechless. - 1986, Pepsi Official, An Evening with Michael Jackson." ~ Clay G. Small, Vice President and Counsel for Pepsi Cola.

"When I heard Diana Ross was getting married, I was happy for her because I knew it would make her very joyous. Still, it was hard for me, because I had to walk around pretending to be overwhelmed that Diana was getting married to this man I'd never met. I wanted her to be happy, but I have to admit that I was a bit hurt and a little jealous because I've always loved Diana and always will". ~ Michael Jackson (Moonwalk, 1988).

[Tatum and I] developed into a real close relationship. I fell in love with her (and she with me) and we were very close for a long time. Eventually the relationship transcended into a good friendship. We still talk now and then, and I guess you'd have to say she was my first love -- after Diana.

(As for how intimate they truly became, this is where his music - nearly always semi auto biographical - should speak for itself. Go listen to the wistful lyrics of "Remember the Time" released in 1992. That song was, as Michael told me, written with Diana Ross in mind; the one great love that, as far he was concerned, escaped him. Jermaine Jackson | You Are Not Alone) 2011.
